Types of Heat Sinks

Depending on the criteria, heat sinks are categorized into active and passive heat sinks. An active heat sink is also known as a fan and is utilized for cooling. The fans with ball bearing have a longer life span, perform well and are more cost effective. They cannot however be used for long term usage. Passive heat sinks are able to disperse heat through convection and are therefore more reliable. These aluminium radiator fans need to have a steady flow of air for efficient operation. Aluminium Heat Sinks are also known as extruded heat sinks and their thermal conductivity is quite high. Forged out of metal in specific shapes, the stamped heat sinks are cheaper and are commonly used for applications requiring low power. Bonded- Fin heat sinks are manufactured either through thermal epoxy or brazing. Usually used for large applications, these heat sinks are found in brick applications and electrical welding.

Importance of Heat Sinks in Electronic Circuits

Heat sinks are designed for a larger surface area that comes into contact with the cool air around it. Electronic parts that cannot control or stabilize their temperature require an Aluminium Heat Sink. This prevents a component from burning out or affecting performance. Heat sinks stabilize the thermal equation in each device or electrical component. The manner in which it dissipates heat is dependent on the material, surface treatment and velocity of air. It is also used to cool down the central processing unit and is usually used as computer memory covers in order to disperse heat. A circuit devoid of heat sinks is prone to failure of the components such as voltage regulators, IC’s, power transistors and LED’s. They can also release heat into the circuit in case of low temperatures.

Aluminium Heat Sinks are used for both management of thermal energy and disperses of heat within an electrical circuit.
